Celebrating Growth and Vision at the Environmental Collaboratory’s 2025 Spring Workshop

On Friday, May 30, the UCI Environmental Collaboratory hosted its 2025 Spring Workshop, “Growing Our Future: Emerging Practitioners and Scholars in Ecology,” bringing together students, faculty, and community partners for a day of connection, reflection, and forward-thinking.
One of the day’s central moments was the presentation of Capstone research by second-year students in the Master of Conservation and Restoration Science (MCRS) program. These students spent the past year partnering with local agencies and organizations to conduct hands-on ecological research—ranging from habitat restoration and biodiversity monitoring to environmental education and resource management. Their presentations served as both a culmination of their graduate work and a launchpad into the professional field, offering valuable insights and sparking meaningful dialogue among attendees.

Adding to the richness of the day, interns from the Center for Environmental Biology (CEB) also took the stage to share the results of their yearlong research and engagement projects. Their work exemplified the passion and dedication of emerging environmental scientists and educators, as they explored real-world challenges and developed community-centered solutions.
Beyond the presentations, the workshop featured thoughtful discussions on the future of ecology and strategies to strengthen conservation and sustainability fields through education, equity, and partnership. The day concluded with a celebratory reception—an opportunity to honor the incredible work accomplished and to continue building the relationships that will drive lasting change. The Environmental Collaboratory, a partnership between UCI’s Center for Environmental Biology, the MCRS program, and UCI Nature, is proud to support the next generation of environmental leaders. This year’s workshop was a testament to the power of collaboration, the importance of mentorship, and the hope we carry as we grow our shared future.
